This and That in Paphos
The city of Paphos is known to enchant all its visitors throughout its long history as a hot holiday destination. The reason for Paphos being such a popular tourist hub is simple, the city is the island’s cultural hub, and it offers the most stunning beaches and an array of fun-packed activities making it impossible to not instantly fall in love with it!
The ancient Medieval Castle of Paphos found in the harbour area of Kato Paphos, was initially a Byzantine fort constructed to protect the harbour. In the 13th century the Lusignans rebuilt the castle after it was destroyed by the Venetians during the Ottoman’s invasion in 1570. In the 16th century, when the Ottoman Empire ruled they reconstructed the quaint fort.
Through the passage of time the castle served many purposes. Initially, it was used as protection but it was also used as prison cells and storage units where the British stored salt. Finally, in 1935 the Medieval Castle was proclaimed as an ancient monument and from then onwards it became one of the most significant landmarks on the island of Cyprus.
