Medieval Castle

Limassol’s Medieval Castle is one of the nine castles found on the Mediterranean Island, which was initially constructed by the Byzantines around 1000 AD. It is estimated that around the same time period, a small charismatic chapel was also built at the same location. The castle is especially significant as it is the place where Richard the Lionheart wedded Princess Berengaria of Navarre, after her ship was stranded on the island in 1191. The castle was also used as prison cells during 1790-1940.
Today the grand Medieval Castle operates as a Medieval Museum where visitors may view artefacts dating from 400-1870 AD. The collection is incredibly impressive and includes cannons, wood carvings dating back to the 17th and 18th century, ancient paintings and tombstones, various impressive statues, armour, ancient coins, terracotta, and finally a diverse collection of glass and marble artefacts!

The famed Folk Art Museum is an astonishingly beautiful preserved ancient house that offers visitors the chance to view Cypriot Folk Art dating back to the two former centuries. The collection includes a variety of fascinating artefacts such as tapestry, wooden chests, men’s jackets, national costumes, embroidery, waistcoats, necklaces, country tools and much more! the exhibition is incredibly impressive as it is representative of the Cypriot culture! The Folk Art Museum was founded in 1985 and its collection includes more than 500 artefacts which are presented in six different rooms. It is noteworthy to mention that the museum was accredited the Europa Nostra award in 1989, which is a remarkable accomplishment!

The Public Garden in Limassol lies on the city’s main coastal road and cannot be missed! The garden is extensive and impressive as it includes a great variety of vegetation such as eucalyptus trees, pine trees and cypresses. Within the garden, locals and tourists alike are known to take walks within the rich green, play games and have picnics! You will also come across a small yet impressive zoo within the grounds of the garden.
