Sightseeing in Mykonos

Breathtaking sun-kissed beaches and scenic landscapes, common amongst the Cyclades, are by far not the only sights worth seeing on the island of Mykonos. Mykonos has a rich history and cultural heritage, evident in the diverse landmarks scattered on the island, most originating from antiquity. The island is packed with incredibly interesting historical, religious and archaeological sites and monuments which are without a doubt worthwhile the visit!

The church of Panagia Paraportiani has long been one of the most popular attractions of the island. the ancient church lies in the Castro area of Chora and is a traditional whitewashed church that was constructed during the 16th and 17th centuries. What is special about the church is that it is in fact made up of five chapels, built over two centuries, in an asymmetrical manner!

Little Venice is the most charming and romantic area in Chora, made up of Venetian two-storey buildings with colourful balconies literally hanging over into the sea. The buildings used to be owned by sea captains in the 16th century and have been transformed into coastal cafes, bars and local taverns. Little Venice is the spot to be when seeking to experience the Mykonian sunset!
Giannaros Well is found in Plati Gialos area and is a massive underground granite cistern or reservoir used in the old days to supply water. Inside the well you will find a ragged-looking staircase leading to its bottom.
The famed Hellenistic Towers also lie in Platis Gialos area. The towers are known by the locals as portes, meaning doors. in antiquity these imposing structures were used to protect the island from invading raids which were common in those days.

Windmills

Mykonos most impressive trademark is the windmills, dotting the hillside by the island’s coastline. The majestic-like and dominant structures once played a vital role in the island’s livelihood, at a time when they used to grain wheat to supply passing ships. They have since been a picturesque addition to the island’s landscape and a special attraction, alluring thousands of enthusiastic travellers year after year.
The enchanting monastery lies in the heart of Ano Mera Village, the second most popular resort on the island, after Chora. The quaint monastery is certainly worth your visit as you will encounter a wonderful wood-carved icon that was made in Florence! The monastery houses an in-house museum where you will view Byzantine and renaissance ecclesiastical icons, impressive woodcarvings, church items and garments.
