Whether you are in the mood for a relaxing beach holiday or a more cultural touring holiday, Limassol will not disappoint you. Kolossi Castle

Kolossi castle is located in Kolossi, a village approximately 10 kilometres west of Limassol. The famous castle belonged to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, where it is said to have been the centre of the ‘Koumandaries,’ the villages that produced and still produce the traditional sweet wine of the island, Koumandaria.

Built in the 15th century, above the ruins of a previous fortress which is dated back to the 13th century, the magnificent castle stands 21 metres in height and consists of three floors. The ground floor of the fortress is divided into three parts, and is said that it was probably used as a storage area. On the east side of the castle lays a glorious staircase made of stone, leading to the second floor where the kitchen was situated, and then up again to the third floor. The third floor was separated into two parts, and was known as the house of the Commander.

On the premises surrounding the castle you will encounter a courtyard which is enfolded by stone walls and the ruins of an auxiliary building, which was possibly used as a storage facility or stable. The entrance of this building is protected by a circle-shaped tower.

Lemessos Medieval Castle

The ancient medieval castle can be found in the heart of the old city in the centre of Limassol, near the Old Harbour. According to historic findings, the castle is where Berengaria of Navarre married Richard the Lionhead and was thereby crowned Queen of England in 1191.
Unfortunately, the precise date the castle was constructed is unknown, but according to Etienne de Lusignan, the father of the the Lusignan empire, built it in 1193 even though the primary mention of the fortress was made in 1228 by Frederic II of Germany.

Through the passage of the years, the castle was invaded multiple times by foreign intruders and also suffered great damages during the severe earthquakes that hit the island in 1562 and 1568. Nonetheless, the Ottomans reconstructed the fortress to its current form.
