The island of Cyprus was the first Christian country in the entire world! Thankfully, Paphos has maintained some of the city’s most important religious landmarks, one of these being Panagia Chrysopolitissa, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The significant church was constructed above the remains of one of the largest and earliest Byzantine cathedrals on the island, in the 13th century. Within the church you will come across Saint Pauls’ Pillar, which according to folklore the faithful Saint Paul was beaten before the Roman Governor Sergius Paulus became a Christian. The floors of the cathedral were decorated with impressive colourful mosaics, some of which are still preserved today.

In 1980 the park has incorporated in the UNESCO World Heritage, and this marked the starting point of a massive and significant project, to preserve the archaeological ruins as well as to promote and inform the public of their vitality. Paphos Archaeological Park comprises of ruins and monuments dating back from antiquity to the Middle Ages, while most of the remains found originate from the Roman era.
Marvel at the amazingly preserved mosaics found in Roman mansions, such as the Home of Dionysos. The park includes other impressive monuments like the ancient Agora, Saranda Kolones Castle, Tombs of Kings, the famed Odeon and Asklipieion.
