Panagia Parapotiani Church

Panagia Parapotiani Church is the most renowned church on the island and is located near the main harbor, in the castle area known as ‘kastro’ in the Greek dialect. The name of the church means inner door, which refers to the Medieval door which provided access to the encircled area of the town or rather castle, during that period. In the past, their used to be a medieval castle, which its surrounding walls used to protect the enclosed islanders from invading attacks. In essence, Parapotiani constitutes of five churches and took over 200 hundred years to be completed! The construction started in the 15th century and completed in the 17th century. Imagine the architectural magnificence of this complex of churches! It is famed that its architecture has made it one of the most popular and photographed monuments in the world!

It is extremely shocking when faced with the reality of how the island has progressed over time, and how the advancement of technology has influenced our lives.
