Faith in Zakynthos island, Greece
It is a well known fact that Greeks, especially islanders, are incredibly religious Christian people. This is evident especially on the islands, where people still maintain their roots, cultures and traditions. Upon visiting the Ionian island of Zakynthos you will be impressed by the manifold of churches and monasteries that exist on the island. When visiting the island do not miss on the opportunity to visit several of these churches and monasteries, to get a real experience of the Zakynthians mentality, beliefs and way of life. Saint Dionysos Church
Saint Dionysos church is located on the south along the coast of Zante near the harbour. The historic church is dedicated to the patron saint and protector of the island, St. Dionysos. The priest St. Dionysos was born on the island in 1546, and refused the benefits his social position granted, being part of the Venetian aristocracy. He preferred to live a simple life, full of kindness, charity and love for people. It is said he has miraculous skills and helped to save many people in need.
Saint Dionysos church was constructed in 1708, and accentuates the Byzantine architectural style of the time. The entrance of the church is filled will religious Christian frescos and paintings. The interior of the church painted in gold. The magnificent religious icons you will notice in the church were made by Koutouzis and Doxaras, both Greek hagiographers, and abundance of pilgrims visits the church to honour Saint Dionysos from all over the world.
The Zakynthian locals cherish their Saint dearly, and organise two annual celebrations in his honour. The first celebration is held on the 17th of December in honour of the Saints death and the second on the 24th of August, in memory of the day the Saint’s Holy Body was transported to the church from the monastery.
Saint Mavra Church
Located in the village of Maherado, the famed 14th century church, Agia Mavra is definitely a religious historic landmark you should visit. The church is located in the centre of the village and is an incredibly distinctive church as it houses a large amount of frescos and icons. Also, the imposing Venetian church bell was built in such a way that when it is rung, it can be heard throughout the entire island.
The most renowned icon exhibited is the icon of Saint Mavra, to whom the church is dedicated to and is considered to be miraculous. Countless offerings surround the icon of Saint Mavra, among the offerings is Queen Olga’s jewel. It is said the icon is dated back to the third century and originated from Egypt, where the Saint lived.
Agia Mavra is celebrated on the 3rd of May in commemoration of the Saint Mavra. On that day, the faithful gather in the church and pray all night!
