The description that best captures the culture of culture was said by Countess Flamburiari, “Corfu town is Venice and Naples, a touch of France and more than a dash of England, apart of course from being Greek.” The noble Countess fully described the town of Corfu. The famed town consists of maze-like narrow and winding streets inviting you to take an adventure and explore. Around each corner you will found a picturesque chapel, an impressive palace or secret parks, gardens and splendid squares. When visiting the town, take the time and explore this historic city, it is truly a life experience!

The impressive Liston building was originally constructed by the French and are extremely similar to those found in Rue de Rivoli in Paris. Liston cafe is probably the best spot to sit, enjoy a cold beer or coffee and watch the hustle and bustle of the town’s centre.

Shops in the centre

Once you have finished observing the locals going about their business, head towards the narrow streets from Liston, where you will uncover a plethora of charming shops of every commercial nature. The most fascinating are the jewellery shops where local jewel craftsmen design and create the jewellery sold in the shops. The designs are one of a kind and incredibly reasonably priced! So start shopping!

The impressive Saint Spiridon Church is dedicated to the island’s patron saint. Saint Spiridon originated from Cyprus, and is said to have saved the island of Corfu multiple times from severe dangers and since then became the patron of the isle. The splendid Venetian church dominates the entire town. The highest spot of the town is the churches bell-tower, so if you get lost simply look towards the sky to find the bell-tower!

Old Fortress

After visiting the most famed church on the island, take the time to visit its dominating old Fortress, which has been built on a rocky peninsula and incredibly enough it has two peaks! The Old Fortress is said to have been constructed during the Byzantine period and is 600 metres long and 200 metres wide. The Byzantines repaired the eastern peak of the fortress and named it Sea-Tower. That was the time when the city of Corfu was founded, and locals believe that the island was named after the peaks of the Old Fortress. That is, ‘korifi’ in Greek means peak, so the name Corfu is said to have originated from the fortress’ peaks!

During the summer months musical performances are held in the British Hospital located in the middle of the fortress. The Second World War British Hospital was transformed into a music school, which performs during the summer months in the midst of the ancient fortress. The nights are magical!
